THE IMPRESSION HE LEFT ON MY LIFE
During the middle 70's, I worked at a Gulf gas station near the Pittsburgh airport. It was during that time, that I not only saw but met President Gerald Ford. I saw the presidential motorcade as it passed the gas station where I worked.
There were people lined up along Beer School Rd.(the route from the airport to the Holiday Inn), cheering and waving as the president passed them by. He just looked so genuine,so real, and that smile will never leave me.
It was about a half hour later, we had received a request for a service call at the Holiday Inn, which was where the president was. I proceded to take the call, unaware that the call was for a vehicle in the presidential motorcade.
I entered the Holiday Inn in my old beat up Chevy service truck, was directed and escorted to the motorcade. One of their vehicles had a dead battery. And lo and behold, it was the vehicle in front of the president's car.
His window was wound down, and he looking out, smiled, waved, and said hello. I looked at him, and heard myself say,"Hi, Mr. President!" He smiled and said hello back again. I asked how he was doing. He responded,"Very good."
I said some other things, but I honestly don't remember what I said, some stupid things, because I was nervous and excited, and he laughed and told me to relax. And then I was rambling on and nervously trying to hook up the jumper cables and I was scared because I was afraid I may cross them and the battery might blow up and then one of the guards would shoot me. I told them that and they laughed at me and the things I was saying and the president too. I was embarassed and I really believe the president saw that, and he gave me words of assurance.
He was not more than 15 feet away or closer. I looked at him, this guy was so down to earth! I just could not believe this guy was the president, but he was.
His smile and the glow about him just made my day.
I proceeded to jump start the car that had the dead battery, got it going, put the hood down, and waved goodbye to Mr. Ford. At this point, I was told that I had to wait til the motorcade left, which I did.
After they were rolling, I was directed to go. They whipped out of the Holiday Inn parking lot, traffic was stopped on Beer School Rd., and I whipped out right behind the motorcade. It was neat!
People were lined up on both sides of the road, traffic was stopped in both directions. People were cheering and waving, and I was in the tailend of the motorcade. So I waved back. When I neared the gas station, the whole place was blocked off. Between people and policemen, I had a hard time getting out of the motorcade into the gas station where I worked.
I reflect on this today as I remember the man, President Gerald Ford. Nothing phony about him. He was the kind of guy that a person like me and anyone else, could connect with. He just had that aura about him. And you knew instantly that you liked him, even if you were a democrat. I was a democrat at that time, but I really didn't have any political orientation. And I sort of felt that way with the president. He just seemed like an everybody guy, someone who cared, who listened. Its not like he commanded respect, but he had a way of gaining your respect. I really liked him.
